The Odeon cinema bedecked for the 1944 film "Henry V". Directed by and starring Laurence Olivier, this film was based on Shakespeare's "Life of Henry the Fifth". Very popular with wartime audiences, it ran for about 5 months in the capital, this was a patriotic film, although it was reasonably faithful to the original book. It was the first film directed by Laurence (later Sir Laurence) Olivier, and he was released from military duties, when Allied victory looked certain, in order to make the film, because of the potential patriotic and propoganda value of such a project. |
